"What thoughts are to the individual, art is to the community as a whole. That's where you reflect on who you are, who you hope to be, what you've gone through, and where you hope to go."
Our Purpose
Transformative Arts Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working at the intersection of art, mental health, and community voice. We exist to make creative expression accessible—helping people make meaning from experience, strengthen resilience, connect with others, and participate in the conversations that affect their lives.
Our Mission
Our mission is to empower communities through art. Working alongside youth and historically underrepresented communities, we create research-informed Photovoice projects, creative wellness programs, and arts-based training that support well-being, strengthen agency and belonging, and bring lived experience into community dialogue and decision-making.
Why This Work Matters
Mental health support cannot begin only after a crisis. People need accessible ways to express emotion, work through difficult experiences, stay connected, and build resilience.
In 2025, 54.6 million U.S. adults experienced mental illness. In 2023, 4 in 10 U.S. high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness.
Statistics show the scale of the need, but they cannot tell the whole story. They do not show what an experience feels like, the strengths people draw upon, or what a community believes should happen next. Art brings that knowledge into view.
Through photography, painting, movement, storytelling, and Photovoice, people explore what they are experiencing, identify shared strengths and needs, and bring their knowledge to families, providers, funders, and decision-makers.
At TAP, art is not added after the work. Art is how we listen, understand, and respond.

Our Core Values: CARE
CARE is how we show up—in the relationships we build, the programs we create, and the stories entrusted to us.
C — Community
Community comes first. We create with, not for, communities and center the knowledge of those closest to the issues.
A — Arts
Art is not an extra; it is our method. We use creative expression to support well-being, make lived experience visible, and open dialogue.
R — Resilience
Resilience grows through strengths, relationships, culture, and creativity. Our programs help people build confidence and move through challenges and change.
E — Empowerment
We do not speak for communities. We provide tools, training, and platforms for people to share their experiences and help shape the decisions that affect them.
We envision a world where everyone has equitable access to creative expression as an essential part of mental and emotional well-being—and where arts-based methods are recognized and supported as credible, research-informed approaches to connection, community voice, and lasting change.
Your gift does more than fund cameras and art supplies. It helps youth participate, equips community members to lead, and creates public exhibitions where lived experience builds understanding, connection, and change.
