Our Story

The Transformative Arts Project, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, was born during the global pandemic. In a time of uncertainty and lockdowns, a group united online, finding solace in dance and art. We turned darkness into light, showcasing art's transformative power and its ability to foster community, even in challenging times.

Who We Are

Our History

  • I am excited to share the incredible journey of the Transformative Arts Project Inc., co-founded with a talented artist and activist, Kalki Subramaniam. Our paths crossed in 2017 while researching the intersections between art and activism for my dissertation. I came across this amazing activist in India using art to empower marginalized communities.’ I had the privilege of traveling to her home in Polochi, India, in 2018 and watching her work firsthand. Fast forward to 2020, at the onset of the pandemic, we embarked on a remarkable artistic endeavor during a time of uncertainty and lockdown.
  • Our daily meetings became a source of inspiration and solace amidst the chaos of the global pandemic. Together, we birthed the Global Healing Dance Collective. This platform invited individuals from around the world to participate in daily dance and art. We met daily, sharing in the practice of doing morning pages followed by dance and reflective sharing. These meetings would sometimes last for 3 hours. This transformative practice became a sanctuary of healing and comfort during those challenging times.
  • During this time, I continued to work on my dissertation research, examining art's power in amplifying marginalized communities' voices. This journey involved working closely with other female activists, using art as a tool to challenge dominant narratives and ignite digital activism through arts-based methods. Previously, I worked with the LGBTQ+ community at the University of Hawaii and the Women’s Center. I witnessed the profound impact of incorporating art projects in addressing critical issues such as domestic violence.
  • Art has always held a special place in my mental health and personal recovery journey, providing me with solace and healing during moments of darkness and anxiety. This personal connection fuels the mission of the Transformative Arts Project. Our vision is to share the transformative power of art with others, believing that it can unite communities, dismantle stigma, and offer a collective space for personal expression and understanding.
  • Through our project, we strive to create a nurturing environment where individuals can find solace and peace through various art forms, whether writing, journaling, or creating visual art. We hope that by embracing art as a means of expression and healing, others can also discover their inner peace and contribute to a world where art is valued for its transformative potential. Our journey has been filled with challenges and triumphs, but we remain steadfast in our commitment to making the world a better place through the power of art.

Healing heArts

At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can.

 ~ Frida Khalo

Frida was a great source of inspiration during this time. Her strength in times of pain and her ability to use art to navigate through some of the most challenging times of her life provides examples of the transformative power art can have.

    The Power of an Image

    TEDx 2023

    • Traditional research is rooted in the ideology that the researcher is the expert. This talk discusses how participatory photography methods, such as photovoice and photo elicitation, change power dynamics, creating equitable practices to understand the needs of communities and create a space for them to frame the stories they tell about their lives. Laura Sherwood is a social scientist with a Ph.D. from the Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California, in Human Development. Her background is in photography and visual ethnography, and her research is dedicated to advocating for the validity of participatory photography methods in research and community-based work. Her doctoral dissertation, “Why Art Matters: Dismantling Dominant Narrative Through Art and Digital Feminist Activism,” focused on female activists using visual storytelling to impact gender equality in India. Laura is the founder of Transformative Arts Project Inc. A 501(c)3 nonprofit uses participatory photography to amplify communities’ voices and lived experiences. Laura facilitates co-generational programs to help seniors and youth utilize technology & visual storytelling and supports nonprofits in understanding the needs of their communities through photovoice. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
