Community Partnerships in Action

Every Project Begins with Partnership

We partner with nonprofits already rooted in and serving their communities. Together, we build each project around shared values and a commitment to placing community voices, lived experiences, and stories at the forefront.

Community Centered

At the center of every Photovoice project is community voice. We begin with a guiding question and support participants in using photography, reflection, and dialogue to explore meaningful topics such as mental health, resilience, recovery, and belonging—from their own perspective.

From Community Voice to Action

Photovoice is not art for art’s sake. Each project makes community strengths and needs visible, challenges assumptions, and raises awareness. Using the SHOWED method, participants interpret their images and identify the themes that matter most to them. Public exhibitions then bring participants into direct conversation with funders, providers, policymakers, and other stakeholders—turning lived experience into community knowledge that can inform action.

Asian American Center of Frederick

Building Community Capacity Through Photovoice

The Asian American Center of Frederick has been a strategic partner since TAP’s earliest days. Together, we have trained more than 150 Community Health Workers through a rigorous Photovoice facilitator program, equipping them to use photography, reflection, and dialogue for community needs assessment and engagement.

Our projects have brought forward the experiences of immigrant and refugee youth, older adults, and CHWs—exploring mental health, migration, resilience, and community strengths and challenges. Their work has been shared through TAP’s annual Community Impact Exhibition, books, and presentations, with the partnership now expanding into research.

Community of Grace: Voices of Recovery

    Community of Grace Org

    Voices of Recovery

TAP partners with Community of Grace  ORG annually on a four- to six-week Photovoice project for mothers in recovery. Participants meet weekly in a supportive space for photography, reflection, and dialogue—building connection while sharing the realities, strengths, and hope found in recovery. Their work is celebrated through an exhibition at Community of Grace’s annual fundraiser, helping challenge stigma surrounding addiction through the voices of women who have lived it.

Through Our Lens: Community Perspectives on End-of-Life Care

      Compassion & Choices

TAP facilitated a national Photovoice train-the-trainer project for Compassion & Choices, equipping facilitators to lead community-centered visual storytelling, reflection, and dialogue. Across the country, 45 participants used photography and narrative to explore how culture, faith, identity, and lived experience shape perspectives on serious illness, caregiving, and end-of-life care.

Their images and stories come together in Through Our Lens, a virtual exhibition that centers perspectives often missing from healthcare conversations and reveals the changes communities want to see.
