Harnessing the Power of Photovoice for Community-Driven Change
Three Core Goals of Photovoice:

Photovoice is for people with firsthand knowledge of an issue, and organizations ready to listen. It engages youth, culturally diverse communities, people in recovery, older adults, and others whose perspectives are often missing from traditional research and planning. Schools, nonprofits, health organizations, CHWs, and PRSs use Photovoice to understand community strengths and needs directly from the people who know them best.

For individuals, Photovoice supports reflection, self-expression, agency, and connection. For communities, it produces participant-generated photographs, narratives, and shared themes that reveal strengths, barriers, and priorities. These findings can inform needs assessments, program design, public exhibits, advocacy, and conversations with funders, partners, and decision-makers.

Surveys can tell us what is happening; Photovoice helps reveal how people experience it and why it matters. By placing community members at the center of the process, it captures context conventional data may miss and turns lived experience into accessible evidence that can guide responsive, community-informed action
