Empowering Communities Through Art

Transformative Arts Project

“Art supports mental health by helping young people understand and express what they feel. When 4 in 10 high school students report persistent sadness or hopelessness, creative expression cannot be treated as an extra.”

TRANSFORMATIVE ARTS

Transformative Arts Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to creating inclusive community arts programs grounded in research and designed to support mental health and emotional well-being. In collaboration with local and international partners, we use creative expression and meaningful dialogue to bring the voices and lived experiences of historically underrepresented communities to the forefront.

Why Art Matters

Why Art

Why Art Matters

Art is not an extra. It is a powerful, research-informed way to support mental and emotional well-being, strengthen social-emotional skills, and bring community voices forward.

Supports Mental and Emotional Well-Being

Creative expression helps people explore emotions, process difficult experiences, reduce stress, and feel less alone.

Builds Social-Emotional Skills

Making and reflecting on art strengthens self-awareness, emotional expression, empathy, communication, and problem-solving.

Brings Community Voices Forward

Through Photovoice and other arts-based methods, people document their lived experiences, identify community strengths and needs, and contribute to decisions that affect them.

Inspires Community Change

Art makes lived experience visible and memorable. Shared images and stories can challenge assumptions, deepen understanding, open dialogue, and inspire action.

At TAP, art is the intervention—supporting individual well-being while helping communities be seen, heard, and involved in shaping what comes next.

Partner with TAP

We believe creativity, resilience, and lived knowledge already exist within every community. TAP creates opportunities for those strengths to be expressed, shared, and heard.

We partner with schools, nonprofits, health organizations, artists, and funders to bring Photovoice, creative wellness programs, and arts-based training to communities.

Bring a TAP program to your community—or help make this work accessible to others.

More than an Image

TAP’s Photovoice Community Impact Project invites young people to reflect on, document, and share their experiences in response to one central question: What are the mental health needs of youth in our community?

500+ community voices—and growing

Engaged through TAP Photovoice projects exploring mental health, community needs, and resilience.

Proven results that speak for themselves.

    Guiding with Passion

Dr. Laura Sherwood founded TAP from a passion for photography and a belief in art’s power to reveal lived experience, support healing, and bring people together. Her doctoral research in India used Photovoice and arts-based methods to explore how images can challenge dominant narratives and place communities at the center of their own stories. That work continues to guide TAP, creating spaces where personal experiences are honored, community voices lead, and art inspires connection and meaningful change.
