Empowering Communities Through Art

Transformative Arts Project

Art helps us see what words alone cannot.

Making lived experience visible strengthens resilience, deepens understanding, and moves communities toward change.

Bring TAP to Your Community

TRANSFORMATIVE ARTS

Transformative Arts Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to creating inclusive, research-informed community arts programs that support mental health, emotional well-being, and resilience. In collaboration with local and international partners, we use creative expression and meaningful dialogue to bring the voices, strengths, and lived experiences of historically underrepresented communities to the forefront.

Why Art Matters

Resilience is more than getting through hard things. It grows when people can express what they feel, make meaning from what they have experienced, connect with others, and recognize their own strength. Art gives people a way to do that.

At TAP, art is at the core of every conversation, connection, and intervention. A photograph can bring an overlooked experience into focus. A painting can give shape to an emotion that is hard to name. Movement can ease tension and reconnect people with their bodies. Storytelling can turn personal experience into shared understanding.

Through photography, painting, movement, and storytelling, people build self-awareness, confidence, coping skills, connection, and belonging. They also make community strengths and needs visible and bring lived experience into the conversations that shape what happens next.

When art is shared, people are not simply seen and heard—they become part of the response.

Art builds resilience. Community voice creates change.

Mental health touches every generation.

More than 1 in 5 U.S. adults experienced mental illness in 2025. In 2023, 4 in 10 high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness.

Behind every number is a lived experience.

We believe creativity, resilience, and lived knowledge already exist within every community. TAP creates opportunities for these strengths to be expressed, shared, and heard.

We partner with schools, nonprofits, health organizations, artists, and funders to bring Photovoice, creative wellness programs, and arts-based training to communities, supporting mental and emotional well-being, strengthening resilience, and bringing community voices forward.

Bring a TAP program or Photovoice training to your community, sponsor a project, or help make this work accessible to others.

PHOTOVOICE: Youth Voices in Focus

Photovoice: Our Signature Program

500+ voices across local, national, and international projects.

Photovoice combines photography, reflection, and dialogue so people can document lived experience, identify community strengths and needs, and bring their knowledge into community conversations and decisions.

Youth Voices in Focus

One question. Youth leading the conversation.

Each year, youth use Photovoice to answer: What are the mental health needs of youth in our community? Through images and stories, they reflect, build resilience, and bring their experiences forward.

Each May, the project culminates in TAP’s annual Photovoice exhibition and Children’s Mental Health Awareness event, featuring youth talent, community dialogue, and a resource fair.

Proven results that speak for themselves.

    Founded in Research

Dr. Laura Sherwood is an arts-based researcher, Photovoice trainer, and founder of TAP. Her work is rooted in a lifelong love of photography, her own experience of art as a source of healing and resilience, and doctoral research in India exploring how images can challenge dominant narratives and help communities tell their stories on their own terms. Today, she partners with organizations locally and internationally to use Photovoice to support mental health, understand community strengths and needs, and bring lived experience into the decisions that shape people’s lives.

    COMMUNITY PARTNERS

TAP partners with local, national, and international organizations to support their missions and bring the voices and lived experiences of the communities they serve to the forefront.

Through Photovoice and arts-based programs, mothers in recovery, immigrant and refugee communities, LGBTQ+ youth, older adults, and others document their experiences, identify strengths and needs, and help the broader community better understand issues too often hidden by stigma.

    Making a Global impact

Each year, we aim to support an international nonprofit by training local community members to lead Photovoice projects. Our international partnerships extend across India, from Pollachi to Hisar and Jaipur, and to the Unatti Foundation in Nepal.

We do not arrive with outside answers. We share the tools and training that allow people to document their own experiences, identify community strengths and needs, and lead conversations about the issues that matter most to them.

    How you can support

Your gift helps make TAP programs possible locally and around the world. Donations support youth participation, creative wellness workshops, community training, art materials, and public exhibitions that build resilience, connection, and community voice.
